Saying goodbye…

A sunbeam to warm you,
A moonbeam to charm you,
A sheltering angel, so nothing can harm you.
~Irish Blessing

Hello everyone – My Mom thought we should let you all know that my sister Kirby died. She did pretty well for a long time, even after we started thinking it was going to be her time really soon. She had a great summer though, right next to me. Even though we called it the Summer of Lincoln, Kirbs got to do everything she wanted to do too. She hung out at the neighbors and enjoyed happy hour on the grass with us every night we were at the cabin. When you are old and sick like Kirbs, my Dad says there are no rules, so she got more treats than I could have ever imagined a dog could eat.  So even though we are pretty sad right now, we know that Kirby had a really good 4 1/2 years with us. She was 12 when we adopted her, so we really never thought we’d get to have her around so long. My Mom says it’s like this saying from Annie, “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”

Even though it was hard, my Mom says that she has no doubts at all that it was the right thing to do and that it was time. We were out of town, so we went to my Aunt Robyn’s vet. Me, my Mom, and my Aunt Robyn went with her. Kirby was just laying there peacefully with her head on my Mom’s lap. While we were waiting, it seemed like she almost fell asleep, but she hadn’t had much sleep much the night before because her cancer was really hurting her. She cried out a couple of times in her sleep, and that was real hard for all of us.  After the vet came in, I turned away because I didn’t want to watch it happen, but I had snuggled with her a little bit before the vet came in, and then I gave her a couple of licks after she died. That was my way of saying goodbye to our sweet old girl.

My Mom says that since all of the Tripawds people are sort of like family, she thought you would want to know. Even though Kirby isn’t a tripawd like I am, she was still a pretty cool old dog. I’m going to miss taking care of her, but I’m sure glad she isn’t hurting anymore. One thing I think we can all agree on is that CANCER TOTALLY SUCKS! Goodbye Kirbs, we’re all going to miss you.

Lincoln is a huge golden who has had one brain surgery, two ACL surgeries, and one rear leg amputation. Yikes.

  1. Dear Lincoln and Rhonda,

It is always so sad to hear of a loved one passing. But Lincoln says it all when he talks of his sister being free now and out of the pain that cancer brings.
You are a special family with so much love to share.
Blessings to Kirby and hugs to all of you.

I am so sorry. I know this must have been so very, very difficult. Letting go – even when it’s the right time – is never, ever easy.

Catie and Riley send you licks and snuggles. I send you hugs and hope you receive them all even though we live so far apart.

    Rest in peace, Kirby.

  3. Lincoln, how lucky you are to have had an old friend. I hope she’s able to stay in touch from the Spirit World, and that that will bring you comfort when you’re lonely. We’re thinking of you “extra-special” today.

  4. We are so sorry that Kirby is gone, losing a family member is so hard.

Thank you for having Kirby live with you in her golden years. I bet she taught you so much. We know she was welcomed on the other side of the bridge by so many of her friends, tripawd and quadpaws.

She’s now cancer and pain free. Run free Kirby and swim, swim, swim!

  8. Awww – I’m so sad about Kirby. I loved seeing all of your pictures with her Lincoln. She was a pretty, pretty girl.
Give your mom an extra kiss since she deserves it. She has a heart of gold and loves all of you so much. Her heart must really be hurting.

  9. I am so sorry I didn’t get a chance to meet Kirby. I do know that you guys have been amazing, taking in dogs in their golden years. Even though I didn’t know her, I do know she was grateful that you gave her a home, and fought the good fight to help her have this time with you. Bless you both for your efforts. What a wonderful family.
Good bye sweet Kirby, there is no more pain now.
    Rest in Peace,
    Elizabeth

  11. Lincoln and Family, I’m so sorry to hear that Kirby has passed. I know this, she was part of a very special family. A giving family, full of love and compassion. Kirby was a beautiful girl and she touched the hearts of many. Her warmth and courage helped to define the summer I have come to know as Lincoln’s. RIP sweet kirby.

  12. Lincoln –
Friday was a tough day, but you did well keeping care of your mom and dad. I’m not sure why but I’m still amazed how you lifted your head and laid it on my lap….looking the other direction….right before she died. You really are an amazing soul – I do believe you knew just what was going on.

You and your dad will keep each other good company while your mom is gone this week. I’m worried, though, about you getting lonely. You can always come back to my house and visit Scruffy, Libby, Harley and Izzy, even though I know you’d prefer the company of your people….

  13. Sweet Kirby, you were a true miracle girl. We are sad that your time had come, but it warms our hearts to know that you had such a beautiful, long life. There is something magical in that family of yours, how blessed you all are to have each other in life and in spirit.

And we are so fortunate to have your family as part of this community. There are many, many group hugs coming your way.

Our deepest condolences to you Lincoln, Rhonda and family. Many, many hugs.
